Europe used the platform to win youth voters for the far right. Far-right National Rally leader Jordan Bardella has gained over 1 million followers on the app by avoiding mentioning politics. He has instead gained a following by coming across as relatable, doing popular dances and trends. With the voting age in Europe being 16 in some places, it is extremely important to tap into that young group of voters if you want to win elections. Unlike the US, Europe has several political groups running in elections. The challenge comes from these groups trying to be present on the app and the number of their followers also on the app, who they wish to target in terms of accounts.
The next generation of voters is on TikTok, not only in the US but in Europe too. Politico says, “Lawmakers from the cernter-right European People’s Party, the largest grouping in Parliament, held fewer than 3 percent of the total likes (on TikTok).”
European politicans are worried about data and hacking like those in the US causing them to opt out of the app competely.
