In October 2022 Elon Musk finalized his purchase of “Twitter” and later changed the platforms name to “X”. Musk immedietely begins making big changes to the platform, including firing executives and fewer limits on content posted to the app.
With Musk’s many changes and expressions of his personal beliefs on the app, one has to wonder how the once respected app now holds up in American politics media landscape.
With the inception of social media like Twitter back in 2006, the American public was met with a new news source. One free of gatekeepers designed to keep certain voices out of the political conversation. Twitter has been home to many key movements and global events such as Black Lives Matter, #MeToo , national elections, Covid-19 pandemic and more. While the app like any other has had its fair share of flaws, Musk has taken these to a whole new level.
Personally, I think Twitter is less fun and more political now more than ever before. The lack of personalization of what I see on my feed, the paid ads and overly conservative media pushed makes me think twice about interacting with anything. Younger and older generations each have other platforms they use, I can’t help but wonder what Twitter will continue to develop as under Musk and especially as we get closer to the presidential election.
Hello Ileni! I completely agree with your observations about Twitter. It feels so much more like a business and political space than what it was originally meant for. I find that the ads are either too personalized or very polarized and the app leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It was so sad to see this happen to my favorite social media. While I still use the app, I am curious to see how it expands and if it will be salvageable or if I will end up deleting it anyways.
ReplyDeleteI have never personally seen much appeal in downloading and using Twitter. I have always viewed Twitter as a place of chaotic debate and discussion. However, Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has seemed to only make things worse. It is disappointing to see the current state of Twitter. It could be an excellent place for discussion and friendly debate. Instead, users are free to abuse the app to spread disinformation and hate. However, I do not believe it is a completely hopeless situation. Changes can be made to improve the app and the user’s experience.
